“The Tapwater Tour” A hands-on class that allows students to discover what is found in their own tap water and compare it to other sources of water including fountains and streams. The students will conduct their own tests measuring pH, chlorine, hardness, iron and copper levels using vials and chemical tablets. Students will need to bring a bottle of water from home for testing purposes.

“Owl Pellets” For the curious—and not so squeamish—this lab looks into the composition of an owl pellet. Students can dissect a pellet and discover the eaten prey by identifying the bones, teeth, hair or feathers of the undigested remains by comparing them to charts. Finds will then be examined utilizing the portable microscope/iPads and shared with the group. GRADES 5-8 April 27, 2012 $20 lab fee

“Rockhounds!” Learn about rocks and minerals! This lab examines of various types of rocks including igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks as well as an assortment of minerals. Students will get to see, touch and hold samples and can utilize the portable microscope to look at areas up close. The lecture touches on the rock cycle, the role of volcanoes, erosion and look at the Moh Rock Hardness Scale. Students utilize iPads to go through interactive volcanoes eruption. The lab include floating samples of igneous rocks in water and identifying types of rock. At the end, students pick out a rock or two to add to a rock tumbler. After a few weeks, students can come and get a polished rock as a keepsake. GRADES 3-8 May 4, 2012 $20 lab fee

Let the typing BEGIN! Our annual Typing Bee competition pits all students grades 4-8 in a contest to determine who is the fastest typist in the school! Prizes are awarded to the two fastest typists in each grade level whom then compete against the other grade level winners. All eight contests then have a Type-Off to see who is will win the grand prize of an iPod Touch!
This year, there will also be a special contest and award for the faster typist utilizing a blackout cover!
The Typing Bee date has been moved to May 22 as the 4th grade is scheduled to on a field trip on May 15.
