P.E.A.R is a day school, afterschool and summer program for the St. Mary and surrounding Avon community. The program incorporates physical education and athletic development exercises, drills, and games and youth yoga to improve the body-mind connection. The physical and athletic development sections of the P.E.A.R. program use movement exercises and drills, activities and games to emphasize the overall development of the student's physical capacities, fundamental movement skills, and the ABC's of athleticism: agility, balance, coordination, and speed. Students have many opportunities to attend advanced physical education after-school programs such as youth yoga, foot skills (March only), strength and conditioning, and other physcial development programs. Healthy living requires that our kids push, pull, throw, climb, lift, and jump, effectively and safely. No matter what they are doing, whether it be competing in sports or just running around being a kid, these are important fundamentals to learn and remember, and most of all, practice on a regular basis. In these movement class, the children learn all the fundamentals of a healthy lifestyle, fitness and experience coordination-building activities that are organized and supervised by movement experts (certified teachers, St. Mary staff members or coaches who completed virtus and cyo coaches training).
Other programs include after-school basketball training sessions, volleyball, baseball, and "body-mech" camps. Register Online through the Parish Sports Pilot program. Click here to register. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Tim Maxey.
Athletic and Physical Development: Youth Yoga
Yoga integrates the body-mind connection and athletes can benefit from this combination of skills training. Benefits of yoga include deep-relaxed breathing, core strength, flexibility and range of motion, balance, and coordination. This program introduces the developing athlete to yoga by using movements that require attention, games using yoga poses, breath work, strength training and visualization. Core body muscular strength and stability is the foundation for essential human movement and this program will help lay the foundation for physical and athletic development.
